4/21 HCAS Acoustic Series Presents: Sounds of Strings and Steel
“Sounds of Strings & Steel”
Greg Merkle - guitars
Karttikeya - handpan and drum set
Greg Merkle is a guitar virtuoso who performs his own remarkable compositions. His dizzying finger-tapping style is intrinsically beautiful. Greg enjoys a cult-like following in his native New Jersey, and he has also opened for musicians like Taj Mahal, John Hammond Jr., Iris Dement, and Johnny Cash.
Karttikeya is a modern renaissance musician and composer whose talents and inspiration span myriad genres, instruments and technologies. His life journey has been similarly diverse - from Berklee College of Music in Boston, to a Hindu monastery in Hawaii, to multiple "bands" and a recording engineering job at Music Together back in Jersey. Musically and otherwise, Karttikeya has demonstrated polite disregard for the conventional. He performs regularly in kirtan, for yoga classes and events, in jazz and rock-country-blues bands, world-beat ensembles, and children's music concerts. Whether on acoustic or electronic drum set, hand drums, rare handpan percussion (Halo and Hang), or keyboards, Karttikeya seeks to connect deeply to the music as it happens, to support and enhance the group expression. He is routinely found working behind a mixing console or recording rig, rounding out his musical role as audio engineer and producer.
